The cathedral, designed by architect Aldo Spirito, serves as the mother church of the Catholic Archdiocese of Abidjan. The cathedral\u2019s foundation stone was consecrated on May 11, 1980, by Pope John Paul II during his first pastoral visit to C\u00f4te d\u2019Ivoire. Plateau is also a district with many shops.
